Message by the Police Chief about Auto Theft
Published on December 06, 2024
Hello, Pinecrest.
The holiday season has arrived, and holiday shopping is in full swing.
Criminals also take advantage of this time to shop, especially for luxury cars.
Last weekend, two luxury vehicles were stolen from Pinecrest. Fortunately, our detectives found them both the evening of December 3. They were discovered on a transport vehicle in Broward County, and the driver was arrested with the keys in his possession.
This is an organized theft ring, and we need your help to eliminate these types of crimes.
The thieves often use rental cars to frequent areas with a high concentration of luxury vehicles or they follow them home.
When they find their target, they approach the vehicle, pull the door handle, and enter if it opens. They then push the start button and drive off. If the car doesn’t start, they move on to the next one.
It’s incredibly fast—a car can be stolen in less than 30 seconds if the key is in the vehicle.
While high-tech devices like key fob cloners exist, we haven’t seen them being used in our area. The majority of the stolen cars in Pinecrest over the last several years have been unlocked with the keys left inside.
Our detectives are working with regional task forces to disrupt and shut down this criminal enterprise, but we need your cooperation.
To protect yourself, ensure that your vehicle is always locked, and the keys are not left inside. If you park in the garage, make sure you close it.
Also, be aware of your surroundings.
If you feel you’re being followed, don’t go home. Instead, call 911 and follow the instructions given. You’ll be directed to the nearest police station or a safe location.
Together, we can make this holiday season a fun and festive time for everyone in Pinecrest.
Happy holidays.
