Pinecrest Receives $280K Safe Streets Grant

The Village of Pinecrest is proud to announce it has been awarded a $280,000 grant through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. This significant funding will support the development of Pinecrest’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. The SS4A grant, part of the US Department of Transportation's initiative, supports local efforts to build safer streets by applying a holistic "Safe System Approach" to road safety.

As an urban planner himself, Mayor Joseph Corradino believes strongly that roads should be safe for all users and is committed to making Pinecrest the safest community in South Florida.

“This grant represents a vital step toward making our roads safer for everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. We are grateful for the federal support, and we look forward to working with our partners to bring an important action plan to fruition,” said Mayor Corradino. 

Pinecrest’s new Comprehensive Safety Action Plan will be developed with the University of Miami KiDZ Neuroscience Center (KNC), leveraging their expertise in pedestrian and bicycle safety. The plan includes data collection on crashes, educational campaigns on road safety, and demonstration projects like safer school zones and quick-build projects in select areas. These efforts align with the Village’s goal of reducing roadway fatalities to zero, ensuring that Pinecrest remains a safe and vibrant community for all its residents and visitors.

Pinecrest, a community of over 18,000 residents in southeastern Miami-Dade County, faces significant traffic safety challenges. From 2019 to 2023 the Village has experienced more than 113 total crashes along US 1, a high-traffic corridor that has been the site of many serious accidents. This grant will enable Pinecrest to revisit its 2018 Transportation Master Plan and create a new, comprehensive strategy to tackle traffic safety issues village-wide. The plan will focus on critical areas such as pedestrian and bicyclist safety, traffic calming measures, and improved mobility across the Village's major roads, including US 1.
