The Village of Pinecrest held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 12, 2024, for the new Gary C. Matzner Park, marking a significant milestone in the community’s history. The event was attended by former Mayor Matzner and his family, alongside current Village officials, community members, and guests.

“Mayor Matzner was instrumental in the incorporation of Pinecrest. His vision for the Village has come true. Three decades later, we are all thriving because of his wisdom, courage, and leadership,” said Mayor Joseph M. Corradino. “We are deeply grateful and want his legacy to live on as a champion of our community.”

The park will feature vast open spaces, natural play areas, a covered playground, a walking path, a restroom shelter, parking, and a park gateway that welcomes residents and guests to the northern entrance of the Village. As a proud Tree City, Pinecrest is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the park. The landscape will include native species and specimen trees, creating a lush canopy for residents to enjoy and connect with nature.

About Gary C. Matzner
In the wake of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which devastated South Miami-Dade and destroyed 50,000 homes, Matzner envisioned the creation of a new municipality to better serve local needs. Alongside his wife Veronica and neighbors Evelyn and Bruce Greer, Matzner spearheaded the movement to incorporate the Village of Pinecrest. From 1994 to 1996, Matzner tirelessly negotiated with Miami-Dade County, rallied community support, and overcame significant opposition. His efforts culminated in the establishment of the Village of Pinecrest on May 16, 1996. Matzner’s leadership continued as he chaired the Charter Commission and served as Mayor from 2008 to 2012.

The naming of Gary C. Matzner Park honors his enduring legacy and recognizes him as the founding father of Pinecrest. His vision, courage, and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the thriving community Pinecrest is today.

This new park further exemplifies Pinecrest’s commitment to creating accessible green spaces for a sustainable future. In line with this dedication, the Village recently purchased the Mas Property, a five-acre site at 11855 SW 60th Avenue, which will be developed into an additional green space. This acquisition underscores the Village Council’s commitment to providing green space within a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk of every resident.
