The Village of Pinecrest is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Gary C. Matzner on July 20, 2024. Matzner was instrumental in the incorporation and development of Pinecrest and is widely recognized as the founding father of Pinecrest.

On July 12, Matzner attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gary C. Matzner Park (6610 N. Kendall Drive), a testament to his enduring legacy and vision for Pinecrest. The event was a significant milestone in the village’s history, also attended by his family, former Mayor Evelyn Greer, Village officials and numerous community members.

“Mayor Matzner’s vision for the Village has come true. Three decades later, we are all thriving because of his wisdom, courage, and leadership,” said Mayor Joseph M. Corradino. “We are deeply grateful and want his legacy to live on as a champion of our community.”

Evelyn Greer, former mayor and founding mother of Pinecrest, added, “Gary’s unwavering commitment and dedication to Pinecrest laid the foundation for the vibrant community we have today. His impact will be felt for generations to come. He was not only a visionary leader but also a dear friend and an inspiration to all who knew him. As his neighbor, I witnessed firsthand his passion for this community and his relentless pursuit of making Pinecrest a better place for everyone.

About Gary C. Matzner
In the wake of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which devastated South Miami-Dade and destroyed 50,000 homes, Gary Matzner envisioned the creation of a new municipality to better serve local needs. Alongside his wife Veronica and neighbors Evelyn and Bruce Greer, Matzner spearheaded the movement to incorporate the Village of Pinecrest. From 1994 to 1996, Matzner tirelessly negotiated with Miami-Dade County, rallied community support, and overcame significant opposition. His efforts culminated in the establishment of the Village of Pinecrest on May 16, 1996. Matzner’s leadership continued as he chaired the Charter Commission and served as Mayor from 2008 to 2012.

Matzner is survived by his wife Veronica, his children Ryan, Alex, Eric Ethan, daughter-in-law Kate, and his sister Susan.

Village flags were flown at half-mast to pay tribute to Matzner. Additionally, a public ceremony to honor Matzner's legacy was held on July 23, immediately followed by Shiva at Temple Judea.
