He grew up in Pinecrest and graduated from Miami Palmetto High School before receiving a B.A and M.A. in History from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Prior to his 2024 election, he served for almost four years on the Zoning Board, where he served as Chairperson for two years. He has a long history of community involvement, including service on the boards of Bet Shira Congregation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Education Fund. For decades, he has been a mentor in the Big Brothers program and, along with his wife Maya, operated the Thanksgiving Baskets Fund, which provided holiday meals to hundreds of local families. Jerry and Maya have three children. Councilmember Greenberg is also a board member of the Miami Palmetto Alumni Association and volunteers as a debate coach at Palmetto Middle School.
